The garden showcases the vital work the Woodland Trust does to bring the UK’s rare and vulnerable ancient woods back to life after decades of being enveloped by timber plantations of non-native conifers. It illustrates how a dark, densely planted conifer forest can gradually be transformed into a thriving, more diverse woodland rich in flowers, fungi and wildlife. This mirrors the Woodland Trust’s real restoration process: carefully thinning non-native trees to let in sunlight and encouraging the natural return of species such as bluebells and wood anemones from the soil’s dormant seed bank.
Visitors follow the restoration journey of a damaged ancient woodland, moving from a dense, shadowy conifer forest into a regenerated landscape bursting with life, colour and beauty. A key feature of the design is the transitional zone where uniform conifers give way to a richer, naturally regenerating woodland, showing how restoration is a long, evolving journey rather than an instant transformation.
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

The Woodland Trust is the largest woodland conservation charity in the UK with more than 500,000 supporters. It has over 1,000 woodlands in its care, covering more than 30,000 hectares. Access to the Trust’s woods is free so everyone can benefit from woods and trees. The Trust’s key aims are to protect ancient woodland, to restore damaged ancient woodland, and to establish native trees and woods with the aim of creating resilient landscapes for people and wildlife.
The garden will be relocated to Hawthorn Primary School in Newcastle upon Tyne. The school, which has achieved a Platinum Green Tree Schools Award, is situated in an area with low tree equity.
