The garden highlights the vital work of Plant Heritage in protecting cultivated plants for the future and aims to inspire the next generation of National Plant Collection Holders. It shines a light on both the ‘living libraries’ already safeguarded within National Plant Collections and those plants still in need of a collector to step forward.
The woodland-style garden imagines ‘the missing collector’ — a mysterious plant enthusiast who has left behind an extraordinary botanical legacy. Vignettes of jewel-toned plants, set within lush green foliage, offer visitors rare glimpses into this treasured collection. More than 10 National Collection Holders will contribute their plants and expertise, with plant collections featured including Geum, Boehmeria, Polypodium and Thalictrum, while the garden will also champion plants that currently lack a National Collection, such as Aquilegia and Verbascum, encouraging future custodians to take up the role.
As well as being rich in planting, the garden features bespoke sandstone installations that echo the knowledge of plant collectors and the passion for learning that inspires so many gardeners. Stone pillars depict stacks of books, while museum-style stone drawers are filled with plants. An unoccupied chair invites visitors to imagine themselves in the role of collector and poses the question: “Could you be The Missing Collector?”
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.

Plant Heritage is the UK’s leading conservation charity for cultivated plants. Through its flagship conservation schemes - the National Plant Collections and the Plant Guardians - it is safeguarding nearly 100,000 different plants, so we can all enjoy them and benefit from them today and in the future. This living library is a resource for gardeners, garden designers, historians, botanists and researchers alike. It includes rare and unusual plants that are no longer for sale and some plants that are now extinct in the wild.
The garden will be relocated to Chester Zoo as part of its growing botanical collection and will continue to promote the role of Plant Heritage in safeguarding the UK’s cultivated plants.
