This is a nurturing space where teenagers can find safety, peace and connection to support their emotional wellbeing. Visitors will step into a reimagined urban landscape created with input from young people, ensuring their voices are at its heart.
The design draws on the Japanese philosophy of 'wabi-sabi' which is the belief in finding beauty in imperfection and the re-crafting of discarded materials. This concept is interwoven throughout the garden design, where forgotten, imperfect materials are thoughtfully reclaimed and recrafted with resilient plants to create a beautiful environment.
Overhead, a canopy of recycled steel rafters, inlaid with handcrafted glass, casts a soothing light across the space, a reminder of how strength and resilience can grow through finding support, or simply pausing for breath in a world that can feel overwhelming.
The planting scheme echoes this narrative of renewal: swathes of spring greens, buttery yellows and deep purples chosen to thrive in challenging conditions. Together, the design offers a welcoming environment where teenagers can feel seen, supported and inspired.
The garden is match-funded by Project Giving Back and The Children’s Society.
The rich text element allows you to create and format headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, images, and video all in one place instead of having to add and format them individually. Just double-click and easily create content.
A rich text element can be used with static or dynamic content. For static content, just drop it into any page and begin editing. For dynamic content, add a rich text field to any collection and then connect a rich text element to that field in the settings panel. Voila!
Headings, paragraphs, blockquotes, figures, images, and figure captions can all be styled after a class is added to the rich text element using the "When inside of" nested selector system.
The Children’s Society is a national charity working to transform the hopes and happiness of young people facing abuse, exploitation and neglect. It supports them through their most serious life challenges and campaigns tirelessly for big social changes that will improve the lives of those who need hope most.
The garden will be relocated to one of The Children’s Society’s Youth Support Centres in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. It will become the charity’s first dedicated outdoor wellbeing space for young people.
